Meditation
Meditation is a mental discipline by which one attempts to get beyond the conditioned thinking (or monkey mind) into a deeper state of relaxation or awareness. Different meditative disciplines include a variety of spiritual and/or physical practices which may emphasize different goals—achievement of a higher state of consciousness, greater focus, creativity or self-awareness, or even a more relaxed and peaceful frame of mind.
In Sue’s meditation class, first you learn to breathe. Breathing is difficult for most people in that they don’t understand that to inhale slowly and thoughtfully takes a presence of mind. Then exhaling to a 4 or 5-count also means you have to think about only the breath. After learning to breathe, and to be present, Sue teaches meditation students simple goals of focus. Eventually, she guides them into various meditations to give them the tools they need to meditate on their own.
