Kundalini Yoga
Kundalini Yoga is a physical and meditative discipline, comprising techniques that use the mind, senses and body to create a communication between all three. Kundalini is a concentrated form of prana (life force) lying dormant in the chakras in the body. In Kundalini yoga, we study chakras (energy wheels) that reside in the body and learn how to cleanse and energize the chakras.
Chakras relate to glands and organs and the wellness of the body areas. For example, you’ve heard someone say they have “heart burn”, or “butterflies in their stomachs” or even something a simple as a headache can and often is caused by a blocked chakra, or energy center. Kundalini yoga can help clear these chakras and open the area of discomfort and free the energy flow. Once you’ve enabled the energy to flow, you see a clearer path to healing the body, mind and spirit.
Kundalini yoga moves, sways, and often uses cardio movements with agna sari (breath of fire) breathing to move the energy through the body. In Kundalini, it is said that a serpent lies coiled at the base of your spine. The movement and poses of the yoga work to make the serpent rise up the spine, thus kundalini rising, energy rising, prana=life force=kundalini rising.
Along with breath of fire, you alternately use long, 3-part deep breathing in Kundalini yoga and meditate about the chakras you are working. As in other styles of yoga, you usually begin warming up on the floor, then move to standing poses, or movements, and work your way back to the floor for a cool down and to savasanah at the end. |
